If you're planning a trip to La Ventana, Baja California Sur, chances are you've heard about its incredible wind. From November through spring, riders from around the world come to this small Baja town to kiteboard, wingfoil, windsurf, and spend as much time on the water as possible.

For someone new to wind sports, one of the biggest questions is: Should I learn kiteboarding or wingfoiling in La Ventana?

Both are amazing sports, and La Ventana is an excellent place to learn either one. But they offer very different experiences on the water.

At Baja Wing & Watersports, we specialize in wingfoil lessons in La Ventana, so naturally we're big fans of winging. That said, many of us come from other wind sports as well, and there are plenty of reasons someone might choose kiteboarding instead.

Here's how the two compare.

What Is the Difference Between Kiteboarding and Wingfoiling?

The biggest difference is how you use the wind.

In kiteboarding, you control a large kite connected to your body by lines and a harness. The kite generates the power that pulls you across the water on a board.

In wingfoiling, you hold an inflatable wing directly in your hands. Underneath your board is a hydrofoil. As you gain enough speed, the foil creates lift and raises the board above the surface of the water.

That feeling of silently flying above the water is one of the things that gets so many people hooked on wingfoiling.

Which Is Easier to Learn: Kiteboarding or Wingfoiling?

This depends a lot on your background.

Kiteboarding requires you to learn kite control, line management, body dragging, board starts, and safety systems before you can comfortably ride on your own.

Wingfoiling removes the long kite lines and harness from the equation, but introduces another challenge: learning how to control the foil.

Most beginners start wingfoiling on a large, stable board. Early lessons focus on controlling the wing, understanding the wind, riding the board in both directions, and eventually learning how to generate enough speed to get onto foil.

Once the foil lifts, you'll have another new skill to master: controlling your height above the water.

Neither sport is instant, but wingfoiling has a relatively approachable setup for beginners, especially when learning with equipment matched to your size and ability.

Why La Ventana Is Such a Good Place to Learn Wingfoiling

There is a reason La Ventana has become one of the most popular wingfoil destinations in Mexico.

During the main windy season, the area receives consistent north winds that are strengthened by the local geography. This creates many days with excellent conditions for learning and progressing.

La Ventana also has a long coastline, which makes it especially well suited to wingfoil downwinders.

At Baja Wing & Watersports, we take advantage of this by using downwinder-style lessons once students are ready. Instead of constantly trying to stay in one small area, you can focus on riding, practicing your technique, and spending more time actually learning on the water.

For beginners, that can make a huge difference.

Kiteboarding vs. Wingfoiling: The Equipment

One of the most noticeable differences between the two sports is the setup.

Kiteboarding requires a kite, bar and lines, harness, board, and safety equipment. You also need enough open space to safely launch and land the kite.

Wingfoiling uses a wing, board, foil, leash, and safety equipment. There are no long kite lines, and the wing isn't attached to you through a harness when you're first learning.

This can make launching and getting onto the water feel simpler.

The tradeoff is that beginner wingfoil equipment can be fairly large. New riders generally learn on larger boards and foils because the extra volume and surface area provide stability and make it easier to progress.

As your skills improve, you can gradually move onto smaller boards and foils.

Which Sport Is Better in Gusty Wind?

La Ventana can have beautifully consistent wind, but like any wind destination, conditions aren't identical every day.

Wingfoiling works particularly well across a wide range of conditions. Because you're holding the wing directly, you can quickly adjust its power by changing its angle to the wind.

Once you're comfortable on foil, the efficiency of the hydrofoil also allows you to keep riding through changes in wind strength.

Learning how to read gusts and lulls is part of becoming a confident rider in either sport.

Which Is Better for Exploring and Downwinders?

This is one of our favorite parts of wingfoiling in La Ventana.

Once you have the skills, wingfoil downwinders allow you to ride along the Baja coastline with the wind at your back. Instead of staying directly in front of one beach, you can cover distance, ride swell, and explore different sections of the coast.

La Ventana's geography makes it an incredible place to develop these skills.

As students progress, our lessons can transition from beginner instruction to coached downwinders, where an instructor rides alongside the student and provides feedback throughout the session.

For experienced riders, learning to connect swell on a foil opens up an entirely different side of the sport.

What If You Already Kiteboard?

If you're already a kiteboarder, La Ventana is a great place to add wingfoiling to your skill set.

Your existing understanding of wind direction, board control, and water safety gives you a head start. The biggest adjustment is usually learning to manage the wing while developing foil control.

Kiteboarders often find that wingfoiling gives them another option on the water and a completely different riding experience.

And if you're already comfortable on a hydrofoil behind a kite, the transition can be even quicker.

Is Wingfoiling Good for Complete Beginners?

Absolutely.

You don't need previous kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, or foiling experience to learn.

We regularly teach complete beginners in La Ventana who have never participated in a wind sport before.

The key is using the right equipment and progressing step by step.

At Baja Wing & Watersports, beginner lessons start with large, stable equipment and focus on building solid fundamentals before trying to foil. As students improve, we adjust the equipment and lesson format to match their progress.

How Many Wingfoil Lessons Do You Need?

Everyone learns at a different pace, so there isn't one exact number.

Your balance, previous board-sport experience, wind conditions, fitness, and how much you practice between lessons can all affect your progression.

Some people begin experiencing their first short foil rides fairly quickly, while others need more time developing wing and board control first.

The goal shouldn't be to rush onto foil. Building good fundamentals makes everything that comes afterward easier.

For students visiting La Ventana specifically to learn, taking lessons across several windy days can be especially effective because you can build on what you learned the previous day.

Kiteboarding or Wingfoiling: Which One Should You Choose?

It really comes down to what sounds more exciting to you.

Kiteboarding may be a great choice if you:

  • Love the feeling of being powered by a kite

  • Want to jump and explore freestyle riding

  • Are excited specifically about learning kite skills

  • Already have experience flying traction kites

Wingfoiling may be a great choice if you:

  • Love the idea of riding above the water on a foil

  • Want a setup without long kite lines

  • Are interested in swell riding and downwinders

  • Want to explore different conditions as your skills progress

  • Already surf, windsurf, kiteboard, SUP, or participate in other board sports

And if both sound fun, you don't necessarily have to choose forever. Plenty of riders eventually do both.
